Herzog Taps Opposition Leader Eizenkot to Form Israeli Government After Political Deadlock

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced Saturday that he has decided to task Gadi Eizenkot, the former opposition leader and chairman of the Jaschar party, with forming a government. Herzog invited Eizenkot to the presidential palace on Sunday at 5 p.m.

This decision came after the President concluded a round of consultations with the Knesset factions and held discussions with various actors within the political system following the recent election.

According to reports, 67 Knesset members from various factions recommended Eizenkot to form the government during the consultation period. In contrast, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received support from only 46 Knesset members from factions, while a faction consisting of seven Knesset members decided not to recommend anyone.

Herzog stated that he met separately with both Eizenkot and Netanyahu to communicate his intention to them.
