Boris Rhein, the Minister-President of Hesse (CDU), has categorically rejected tax increases planned for next year, warning the federal government against imposing heavier taxes on items like tobacco, sparkling wines, and sugary drinks. Speaking to the “Bild” newspaper’s Thursday edition, Rhein stated, “I reject any tax increases for our citizens generally. The daily concerns of the people must now be central to politics in Berlin, and this includes the rising cost of living in all sectors.” He emphasized that the planned relief measures, such as the fuel discount, must not be negated elsewhere. Rhein stressed, “If we relieve people financially through the fuel price brake at the pump, the state should not recover that money by hiking taxes on groceries in the supermarket.”
