Following the CDU’s historic electoral defeat in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the pressure on federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is mounting. CDU top committees in Berlin are scheduled to meet Monday morning to deliberate the consequences of the party’s first-ever exit from a state parliament in the Federal Republic’s history. Merz plans to appear before the press around 1:30 PM. Earlier on election night, after initial forecasts still showed the CDU above the five-percent threshold, Merz addressed the public promoting his reform agenda and reaffirming his desire to remain in office, both as Chancellor and party leader. However, whether this stance will satisfy calls for a change in leadership remains doubtful. Complications are also expected on Tuesday during the Union parliamentary group meeting in the Bundestag.
On Sunday, the CDU not only lost its seat in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament with 4.9 percent, but it also declined to 18.8 percent in Berlin, dropping significantly behind the Left party (25.7 percent). While a coalition led by the CDU featuring the Greens might theoretically be possible, it is likely that the CDU will be excluded from the governing coalition.
