Housing Benefit Cuts Under Fire: Left Party Slams Policy as ‘Merz Chainsaw’ Amid Housing Crisis

The Left party has sharply criticized the cuts to housing allowance (Wohngeld) announced by Housing Minister Verena Hubertz (SPD). According to Left party leader Ines Schwerdtner, these cuts will worsen the difficult situation in the housing market. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Schwerdtner suggested that this demonstrates the “Merz chainsaw in action,” adding that the federal government is once again cutting benefits for those who already have little.

Schwerdtner further asserted that the current government lacks any viable solutions for the dramatic housing market crisis. She argued that while the federal government cites a difficult budgetary situation, this cannot be used as an excuse if the government does not attempt to tax the wealth of the very rich.

Prior to this criticism, Housing Minister Verena Hubertz (SPD) had briefed the “Rheinische Post” on changes affecting all housing allowance recipients. Hubertz confirmed that the cuts would unfortunately impact all current recipients, stating that one-third of previously eligible housing allowance households would be affected. The draft legislation relating to these changes is currently undergoing inter-departmental review.
