Since beginning their offensive in Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have launched drones and missiles toward neighboring Saudi Arabia. The Houthi group claimed that their targets included a military base in the Sharurah province of the Najran region, though no evidence or specifics regarding the timing of the attack were provided.
According to Saudi authorities, sirens sounded in the Sireen province on Saturday, but no casualties or damage were reported from this incident. Later, during the night, a shell reportedly struck the governorate of al-Tawwal, near the Yemen border at the Red Sea. This strike resulted in the injury of two people and damaged a mosque and several other buildings. The Civil Defense Authority attributed this incident to the Houthis.
This activity follows a previous drone attack in Saudi Arabia that successfully shut down a critical East-West pipeline. Given that the pipeline previously transported up to five percent of global oil supplies, the prior attack likely intensified pressure on worldwide fuel and gasoline prices. Saudi Arabia had attributed that earlier pipeline disruption to Iran-supported militias operating in Iraq.
Furthermore, on Sunday, further attacks against Saudi oil infrastructure reportedly took place. Media reports indicated that the refinery in Yanbu was targeted by a drone attack, although the exact extent of the damage at that time was unclear.
