In an international operation targeting sexual violence against sedated individuals, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Germany, collaborated with law enforcement from several countries to identify 156 perpetrators and victims. The BKA announced on Thursday that the “Medusa” operation also yielded 274 new investigative leads.
The investigators met between June 22 and 24 at the headquarters of the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) in London. This project, which is co-led by Germany and the United Kingdom, involves participants from Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, the USA, and Europol.
The focus of the operation is on perpetrators who commit sexual violence against sedated individuals, often within their social circles and spanning a prolonged period. These victims are drugged using combinations of pharmaceuticals and painkillers, frequently mixed with alcohol, which can be potentially life-threatening.
Crucially, many victims are unaware of the sexual assault because the substances prevent them from remembering the event. Perpetrators often record their actions and then disseminate these videos online, particularly through messaging services or on pornography platforms.
The BKA emphasizes that anyone who is affected or witnesses such an incident should contact the police immediately. If there is any suspicion of sedation-such as unusually long periods of sleep or gaps in memory-a doctor should be consulted without delay, as many of the substances are only detectable for a short time.
