The situation in Nepal remains unclear following a fatal flash flood that has claimed at least several dozen lives and left hundreds missing. A spokesperson for the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin told dpa on Wednesday that the full scope of the disaster is currently difficult to estimate and the situation on the ground is highly complex. They sadly anticipate that there will be a very high number of casualties.
At this time, the Foreign Office has no knowledge of any German citizens among those affected, and preliminary media reports concerning Germans have not been confirmed. However, the German Foreign Office reported that the embassy in Kathmandu is maintaining close contact with local authorities.
According to an official list provided by Nepalese authorities, a total of 384 individuals are missing, of whom 291 are foreigners. The nationality of 111 of these missing persons remains unknown. Specifically, the missing list includes at least 142 people of Indian nationality, 17 from Malaysia, 12 from Great Britain, four from South Africa, three from the United States, and one person each from Australia and the Netherlands.
Images circulating online depict flash floods tearing away or severely damaging buildings, bridges, and roads. However, the direct authenticity of all the photographs presented could not be verified.
