Doug Petno, Co-President of the US major bank and head of the Commercial & Investment Bank, asserts that the capital markets are currently experiencing a “golden age,” projecting continued strength in stock markets. He cited the June Initial Public Offering (IPO) of space company SpaceX, which JP Morgan covered, as clear evidence of the potential inherent in modern capital markets.
Despite the optimistic outlook, Petno argues that concerns regarding the enormous investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the required infrastructure are unfounded. He conceded that AI development will not follow a perfectly linear upward trend, warning that events causing periods of strained confidence are inevitable. However, he maintains no reservations about AI and also does not anticipate defaults within private credit funds, noting that JP Morgan itself is involved in this sector with approximately $50 billion.
Regarding the entrepreneurial landscape of Germany, Petno acknowledged its significant potential, specifically highlighting Munich. He noted that Germany possesses the capacity for a “true breakthrough,” driven by “brillant founders” and firms with exciting business models. Nevertheless, when compared to the United States, he pointed out that the German market suffers from a lack of capital and risk tolerance. He concluded that while companies in places like Silicon Valley are permitted to fail, failure remains “too stigmatized” throughout Europe.
