JU Leader Warns Against Elterngeld Cuts, Claiming Reforms Would Backfire on Young Families

The Young Union (JU) has voiced sharp criticism regarding the proposed savings plans related to parental allowances. Johannes Winkel, the head of the JU, strongly attacked the plan to save 350 million euros annually through reductions in wage replacement payments. Speaking to Spiegel, Winkel noted that the federal government is undertaking a reform process intended to mitigate the effects of demographic change. However, he warned that cutting parental benefits would only worsen the very problem that initiated the reform effort. He stressed that such a cut is not merely illogical, but actively pushes the entire reform process to an absurd conclusion. The 35-year-old JU chief further cautioned his party about potential loss of public trust, stating, “For the CDU, this is about more than just the scope of a wage replacement payment”. He added that it concerns the party’s reputation as the family party, and whether and by whom the interests of the younger generation and young families are being represented during the demographic crisis in Germany.
