During his address to the US Congress on Tuesday, King Charles underscored the enduring bond and unity between the United Kingdom and the United States, while also touching upon areas of current difference. He emphasized that despite any disagreements, both nations stand together in their commitment to protecting democracy, guarding their people from calamity, and honoring those who risk their lives in service to both countries. He quoted President Trump, recalling his visit to Britain last autumn, who described the link of connection and identity between America and the United Kingdom as invaluable, eternal, irreplaceable, and unbreakable.
The King reflected on the democratic histories of both countries, highlighting the importance of pluralism, the separation of powers, and enduring democracy. He referenced the American Founding Fathers, stating that 250 years ago-or, as he noted, “just recently” in the UK-they declared independence. He explained that the founders achieved this by balancing opposing forces and drawing strength from diversity, uniting thirteen disparate colonies into a nation built upon the revolutionary ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Charles praised the democratic spirit, noting that the promise of the founders is reflected in every congressional session by the deliberations of many who represent the living mosaic of the United States. He pointed out that the very existence of their vibrant, diverse, and free societies gives them collective strength, an essential asset even when confronting the societal failings that tragically persist in both nations today.
Furthermore, he stressed that freedom and equality are not the only crucial ideals. He specifically highlighted the necessity of the rule of law-the guarantee of stable and accessible legal frameworks-alongside an independent judiciary that resolves disputes and ensures impartiality. He argued that these features were instrumental in creating the conditions for unprecedented, century-long economic growth in both nations.
Recalling the military collaboration of the two countries throughout history, Charles spoke out in strong support of Ukraine, asserting that “unshakeable determination” is required today to defend Ukraine and its brave people, which is necessary to secure a truly just and lasting peace.
Finally, the monarch shifted focus to long-term global challenges. He urged the audience to consider their shared responsibility to protect nature, calling it humanity’s most precious and irreplaceable resource. He warned that the current generation must determine how it will confront the potential collapse of essential natural systems, a threat that endangers far more than merely the harmony and indispensable variety of nature. He cautioned that by ignoring the reality that these natural systems-in other words, the economy of nature itself-form the foundation for both their prosperity and national security, they are acting at their own peril.
