Kipping Slams Government “Relief Package” for Ignoring Deepening Social Inequality

Katja Kipping, the former chairwoman of the League of German Greens, criticized the federal government’s planned “relief package” arguing that it overlooks critical social imbalances. Speaking to ntv’s program “Blome und Pfeffer” and drawing on her own experience in governmental roles, she noted that crafting such a package was far from simple. She expressed concern, however, about the inherent decisions the government makes regarding which groups ultimately benefit from the relief measures.

Kipping was particularly critical of the planned fuel discount. She pointed out that this measure would reduce tax revenue, funds that could otherwise be allocated to areas such as “rail construction, security, and education”. Furthermore, she questioned whether the benefits would actually reach ordinary citizens, suggesting instead that the money might remain with oil conglomerates.

She estimates that the fuel discount equates to the cost of a year-long, inexpensive Deutschlandticket, a benefit she claims would “broadly benefit many people” while simultaneously promoting a shift toward public and rail transport.

In addition to the fuel issue, she heavily criticized the lack of dedicated support for social institutions. She highlighted that nursing homes, daycare centers (Kitas), and other facilities are struggling with high energy costs but are receiving “nothing direct”. For Kipping, this institutional neglect was more troubling than any internal disagreement within the coalition government, describing it as a “blind spot when it comes to social matters”.

She concluded with a stern warning, arguing that this social indifference actively aids the enemies of democracy. “The greater the social uncertainty, the easier it is for the right-wing populism” she cautioned.
