Klingbeil: Belgium’s World Cup Victory Was ‘Revenge’ Against Trump’s FIFA Interference

Vice Chancellor and SPD Chairman Lars Klingbeil welcomed Belgium’s victory over the United States at the World Cup, coupling his congratulations with criticisms directed at US President Donald Trump. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Klingbeil stated that Belgium had “done us a great favour,” effectively “avenging Trump’s interference.” He referred specifically to reports of Trump contacting FIFA President Gianni Infantino after a red card issued against a US player had been overturned. While noting his enthusiasm for football, Klingbeil also offered praise to Norway, deeming them “simply very sympathetic,” both in terms of their fans and their overall spirit at the tournament, adding that although France was his title favorite, both Belgium and Norway deserved a successful run.

Greens politician Anton Hofreiter also expressed satisfaction regarding the USA’s elimination from the competition. Telling RTL and ntv, Hofreiter commented, “Well, I mean, Trump obviously interfered in that matter. FIFA subordinated itself, which was truly embarrassing.” According to him, therefore, it was “absolutely fair” that the Belgians defeated the US so clearly.
