Portugal successfully secured their spot in the round of 16 after defeating Croatia 2-1, thanks to a late goal scored in stoppage time during the World Cup match.
The game began with a scoreless first half. Although Portugal dominated the play, they were unable to convert their chances, while Croatia offered little threat in attack.
The dynamics of the match shifted after the interval. In the 53rd minute, Croatia took the lead when Ivan Perisic capitalized on a cross delivered by Josip Stanisic, slotting the ball flat into the net. Portugal quickly responded just 15 minutes later, with Cristiano Ronaldo equalizing from the penalty spot in the 68th minute. He drove the ball accurately into the center of the goal, fooling Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
The decisive goal came deep into the match. During stoppage time, Rafael Leao whipped in a cross from the left wing. Goncalo Ramos rose highest and powered a header from about eight meters into the far corner, leaving Livakovic unable to make a save. This final strike guaranteed Portugal’s advancement to the next stage, forcing Croatia out of the tournament despite a committed effort. Portugal will now face Spain in the round of 16.
