Law Critics Say It Will Hike Costs, Not Stabilize Them

Janosch Dahmen, the Green Party’s parliamentary spokesperson for health policy, sharply criticized the proposed reform for the statutory health insurance system. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Wednesday, Dahmen argued that while the legislation is titled the “Contribution Stabilization Law” it ultimately fails to stabilize contributions. Instead, he deemed the law “insufficiently effective” predicting that health insurance contributions will continue to rise in the years to come.

Dahmen further accused the federal government of simply shifting financial problems onto both the insured population and the businesses sector. He stated that the legislation burdening the law “in the pockets of premium payers” and companies through higher ancillary payroll costs. He contrasted the expected outcome, insisting that what should have been a “relieving law” in this time is instead becoming a “burden law” for the public.

He held the Health Minister, Nina Warken (CDU), and Finance Minister, Lars Klingbeil (SPD), responsible for the overall situation. Dahmen specifically cited Finanzminister Klingbeil for allegedly withdrawing two billion euros annually from the system. According to Dahmen, this action is not only unnecessary but will exacerbate “a problem that was already large”.
