Left Party Slams Slow Housing Construction, Demands Immediate Investment in Affordable Homes

The Left party has described the low number of completed housing units last year as “shameful”. Caren Lay, the Left party’s spokesperson for housing policy, told the “Rheinische Post” that the steps announced by Housing Minister Verena Hubertz were insufficient. She stressed that there is an urgent need for an investment program focusing on social and non-profit construction.

Lay insisted that the construction of social, municipal, and cooperative homes must be prioritized. Furthermore, she argued that the federal government itself needs to build a relevant quantity of affordable housing. According to Lay, the subsidies promised by the federal government for non-profit housing must finally be delivered.

Lay criticized the situation, stating that Germany is short by at least 1.4 million homes, with a critical lack of affordable housing being the primary issue. She warned that the strained housing market is increasingly becoming a “social stress test”.
