Heidi Reichinnek, the head of a left faction, has accused the center-right and social-democratic coalition of failure after one year. She stated that the coalition’s achievements are a record of “chaos, uncertainty, and open conflicts” forcing the country’s residents to deal with detrimental consequences.
According to Reichinnek, the conservative Union attempts to solve modern problems using outdated solutions, focusing solely on the interests of its wealthy benefactors. Simultaneously, she criticized the SPD for appearing weak, struggling merely to prevent the Union from capitalizing on the moment by aligning too closely with the AfD. Furthermore, she argued that Friedrich Merz’s strategy of weakening the AfD by incorporating its rhetorical and political elements only strengthens the AfD and the increasingly right-wing flank within the CDU/CSU itself.
Expressing deep disappointment, Reichinnek lamented that no government has been so unpopular, yet no one at the cabinet table seems to be noticing. Instead, she claimed the current government is increasing pressure along all fronts-dismantling the welfare state, threatening health insurance and pensions, and eroding labor rights.
Looking ahead to the one-year anniversary, she demanded a complete reversal of course from the coalition. She insists that the government must enact measures that immediately improve the material lives and affordability for the public. These proposed solutions include a tax reform designed to relieve pressure on low and middle incomes; implementing rent caps and promoting social housing; making targeted investments in the industrial base and renewable energy sources; establishing a universal civil insurance system to lower contributions while improving care; and establishing a pension structure funded by all working citizens. According to Reichinnek, the public mandate for these reforms is clear, and the governing coalition must now take action.
