The Schwarz Group is reportedly planning to construct a data center in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern worth several billion euros. According to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Thursday edition), citing several individuals familiar with the matter, this planned major investment is intended for Dummerstorf, near Rostock. Government spokesman Andreas Timm noted that the facility’s power supply will utilize renewable energy sources, though further details on that plan are expected to be announced on Thursday.
The subject of this major expansion was discussed when Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) received Schwarz Group CEO Gerd Chrzanowski in a meeting held on Thursday.
The Schwarz Group is primarily recognized for its retail operations, including the discount chain Lidl and the supermarket chain Kaufland. However, the company is also pursuing ambitious plans through its Schwarz Digits division. Schwarz is positioning itself as a “digitally sovereign” alternative to major US technology corporations, particularly targeting the public sector and regulated industries. As part of this strategy, Schwarz Digits has developed a cloud offering with Stackit and is currently building a data center in Lübbenau, Brandenburg for an investment of 11 billion euros.
