The expansion of the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus of the Bundestag will not open as scheduled, with the handover now pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2026, instead of the planned date in July 2026.
This delay, according to a report from the Federal Agency for Building and Spatial Planning (BBR) cited by Politico, is due to newly identified issues during the commissioning process. Specifically, malfunctions were detected in the smoke extraction system, a safety-critical component of the facility. Before the final approval by expert assessors can take place, additional technical adjustments and fresh examinations must be completed. Consequently, the handover to the Bundestag administration must be postponed from the third to the fourth quarter of 2026.
Construction on the Lüders House originally started in 2010. While the initial budget for the project was set at 190 million euros, the current estimated cost has now surpassed 450 million euros.
