The pilots’ union Cockpit has announced further strikes targeting Deutsche Lufthansa and its associated companies, including Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa CityLine, and Eurowings. The planned strike is set to begin at 12:01 AM on April 16th and conclude at 11:59 PM on April 17th. Flights departing from German airports during this period are expected to be affected. Flights to certain countries in the Middle East remain exempt from the strike, due to the ongoing situation in the region. On Tuesday, Cockpit chief Andreas Pinheiro stated, “The situation has not changed-there has been no movement from the employers”. He specified further that neither Lufthansa nor Lufthansa Cargo has presented an offer regarding occupational pension provisions, nor has Lufthansa CityLine put forward a viable offer for a new collective bargaining agreement, and Eurowings lacks an offering for occupational pension cover. Given these circumstances, Pinheiro proposed that the employers initiate a binding mediation process to resolve the ongoing collective bargaining disputes. According to Pinheiro, “The situation is at an impasse”. He argued that mediation would provide an opportunity to resolve the existing tariff conflicts through an independent third party, thereby preventing further escalation. The vice-president added that their focus is not on power struggles or ego, but rather on finding sustainable solutions. If the employers agree to the mediation proposal, the Cockpit union will promptly submit suggestions for a “suitable mediator”.
