Magdeburg’s Mayor, Simone Borris (independent), commented on the verdict delivered against the perpetrator of the Christmas market attack. On Friday, Borris stated, “Neither gratification nor any form of compensation can exist.”
While the conclusion of the trial is a significant day for many victims, the Mayor added, “We know that no verdict can undo what happened. The relatives of the deceased, the injured, and many other affected individuals will continue to bear the consequences of this act.”
She stressed that it is the duty of the rule of law to assess the crime and issue an appropriate judgment, though she kept her personal opinion regarding the severity of the sentence reserved. The Mayor of Magdeburg expressed trust in the court’s decision, emphasizing that even after the proceedings have concluded, the city will remain supportive of the victims, their families, and everyone affected.
The Magdeburg Regional Court sentenced the attacker to life imprisonment on Friday and determined the exceptional severity of his crime. However, the court merely reserved the possibility of subsequent protective custody-a point considered a gain for the defense, which simultaneously provides grounds for a potential appeal (revision).
