SPD MP Mahmut Özdemir has been suggested as a potential candidate for the position of General Secretary under a possible new SPD chairman, Hubertus Heil. According to reporting from the “Welt”, the Duisburg SPD politician could take up this role if the former Federal Minister of Labor becomes the party leader following the January party convention. This possibility arose after Heil gave an interview to the “Spiegel”, where he stated that he had not ruled out a candidacy for the SPD chairmanship. When asked specifically about a potential application, Heil responded, “That is possible.”
Responding to the “Welt”‘s query regarding whether he himself was available to serve as a potential General Secretary, Özdemir affirmed that he is “always ready” to contribute to a new leadership structure that makes the heartfelt concerns of voters non-negotiable and places the interests of the party at the center.
Özdemir also strongly endorsed Heil, stating, “Hubertus Heil has always shown that he takes responsibility for the SPD, especially during times of crisis. Whether ad hoc as General Secretary or more recently as the Labor Minister. I frequently hear Hubertus Heil’s name at the party base and during union seminars, associated with great appreciation and the wish that he should play a prominent role for the SPD in Germany again.”
Conversely, Özdemir leveled sharp criticism at the dual role held by SPD Chairman Lars Klingbeil as both party leader and Federal Minister of Finance. He noted that frustration has been building at the party base for an undue period of time. He lamented that the visibility of the SPD is undermined when its party chairman is simultaneously a minister in the unpopular Grand Coalition under the unworthy Chancellor Merz. Consequently, the bad compromises and clumsy errors of Merz’s government are being directly blamed on the SPD.
Özdemir argued that the party chairman can no longer represent “pure SPD” in government affairs, but must always convey compromise. Furthermore, he criticized the fact that the SPD is being fragmented between governmental responsibilities and maintaining its own independent party profile. On a policy level, Özdemir demanded a stronger focus on work and results. He concluded by calling for tax reductions on the basic allowance to compensate for the loss of purchasing power caused by cold progression, stating that “this has been overdue for a long time.”
