During the 32nd matchday of the Bundesliga, 1. FSV Mainz 05 secured a crucial 2-1 away victory against FC St. Pauli. The Rheinhessen side established their winning position before the half-time whistle.
The breakthrough came early in the 7th minute, when Phillip Tietz scored, converting a precise right-footed shot into the lower right corner after receiving an assist from Becker near the penalty area. Just before half-time, Phillipp Mwene increased the lead to 2-0. Following a long pass from Batz and a set-up from Widmer, Mwene pounced on the opportunity, slamming the ball low and fast under the crossbar.
In the second half, St. Pauli attempted to turn the tide, but the Mainz defence, managed by Alexander Blessin, remained highly organized, leaving the visitors with few avenues for attack. Despite making changes and utilizing fresh players like Martijn Kaars and Abdoulie Ceesay, St. Pauli struggled to find an equalizer. They appeared offensively toothless and were unable to genuinely test Mainz goalkeeper Batz. The only breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute when St. Pauli’s Abdoulie Ceesay managed to curl the ball right over the opposing line; Batz reached it, but could do nothing to stop the goal.
Nonetheless, the 2-1 victory proved valuable for the hosts from Rhineland-Palatinate, helping them gather important points in their fight for a top-table finish. Conversely, St. Pauli faces continued pressure. Having gone seven games without a win, they remain stuck at relegation spot 16.
