Martin Hagen Elected FDP General Secretary with Subpar Vote Share

Martin Hagen has been elected as the new General Secretary of the FDP. Although he secured the position, his victory came with a relatively low result of approximately 58.8%. Since only the party chairman can nominate candidates, Hagen faced no direct opponent.

Historically, FDP General Secretaries typically enter office having achieved results of 80% or higher, though there have been less successful outcomes in the past, such as Irmgard Adam-Schwaetzer, who was elected in 1982 with only 53.2%.

Other elections took place at the FDP party conference on Saturday. Henning Höne (71%), Svenja Hahn (72%), and Linda Teuteberg (66%) were elected as Deputy Party Chairs.

For the Executive Board, Susanne Seehofer (84%) was elected without an opponent. Benjamin Strasser (52%) took his seat after progressing to a second-round runoff against Gero Hocker. Nadin Zaya successfully secured a spot with 57%, winning outright in the first round against two rivals, Dirk Hilbert and Thorsten Lieb.
