Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) stated that he intends to discuss major issues with French President Emmanuel Macron during the upcoming Franco-German ministerial council meeting. Speaking at a reception held at Château Bensberg in Bergisch Gladbach on Thursday, Merz announced that the discussions will cover economic policy, energy policy, and security and defense policies. He expressed satisfaction that the French government and President Macron had accepted his invitation to visit Germany this summer of 2026. The Chancellor noted that this week marks the second time he will be meeting with Macron. Both Merz and Macron plan to use Thursday evening to prepare for the government meeting, which will take place the following day, Friday, at Château Augustusburg in Brühl. Several government representatives from both nations are expected to attend this high-level meeting.
