Merz Calls for NATO Unity and “Spirit of Ankara” to Bolster Transatlantic Defense against Russia

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) expressed his hope that the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, will result in a “sign of strength and unity.” Speaking before his travel to the summit, Merz noted that Germany had intensively prepared for the event. He stated that he wishes the group to successfully awaken what he terms an “Ankara spirit.”

The core message Merz aims to deliver from the summit is the commitment to building a European NATO, ensuring the alliance can maintain its transatlantic character. This commitment, he added, will not only be supported militarily but also by bolstering the defense industry.

Looking specifically at the war in Ukraine, Merz believes the summit could mark a significant turning point in the conflict. According to Merz, the Kremlin should finally realize that Russia will not succeed in this war and will fail to achieve its military objectives.
