During his visit to Ukraine, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) promised comprehensive further support for the country. He stated that Germany is the strongest supporter of Ukraine, and that this support serves Germany’s own interests by safeguarding the security of Europe. Merz asserted that the Russian economy will not be able to sustain the war indefinitely because it is facing economic limits.
The Chancellor announced a new package of military assistance valued at approximately one billion euros. This funding will be allocated for the production of anti-jet drones, precision-guided munitions, combat drones, and satellite technology to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Additionally, he pledged energy aid totaling 350 million euros to assist Ukraine in preparing for the winter months. Merz emphasized that both the German government and its population stand firmly behind Ukraine, and that cooperation benefits both nations.
Addressing the broader geopolitical situation, the Chancellor also commented on the political stability within Germany and its importance for the entire continent. He explained that aid for Ukraine is in Germany’s national interest and that the fundamental political order of Europe is under threat. Merz concluded by stressing that Germany is determined to engage in this political debate to secure a peaceful and free future for Europe.
