Minister Stands Against Sugar Tax Despite Cabinet Decision, Demands Health Funding Guarantee

Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) maintained his critical view regarding the taxation of sugary beverages. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, the minister stated that his position remains unchanged. While acknowledging the possible revenue stream, Rainer emphasized that he is convinced it is crucial that any funds collected are specifically directed toward the healthcare system. This discussion comes against the backdrop of the Federal Cabinet proposing a reform to the statutory health insurance, which includes plans to implement a levy on sugary drinks starting in 2028. Historically, Rainer has been outspokenly opposed to the sugar tax. Last December, speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he had argued against such a fee, noting that “we do not need a sugar tax” and pointing out that “tax increases are not stipulated in the coalition agreement”.
