Jan Riedel, the Minister of Education for Saxony-Anhalt (CDU), expressed concern that the region is facing an educational crisis rooted in citizens’ increasing isolation from democratic discourse. According to Riedel, it is becoming increasingly difficult for traditional media to reach the public, as many people now predominantly consume content via TikTok, right-wing online platforms, and local tabloid newspapers-environments where the AfD is notably prominent.
Riedel argues that the rejection of consensus and compromise, which are crucial lubricants for a functional democracy, is replacing these constructive principles with views of weakness. He noted disturbingly that even children are spreading far-right rhetoric. This situation is compounded in schools, where teachers face heightened pressure, particularly from parents, when they attempt to intervene appropriately.
The Minister warned that if citizens restrict their consumption solely to content they already agree with and refuse to engage in democratic debate, the consequences will manifest as a severe educational problem. This concern arises against the backdrop of the upcoming state election in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6th, with the AfD currently holding a leading position in polling.
