The number of new asylum applications in Germany also saw a decrease in April. According to a report by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), 6,144 initial applications were recorded. This figure marks a reduction of 837 applications compared to March and 2,964 fewer than the same period in April of the previous year. This means a decline of approximately one-third compared to the previous year’s month.
The lowest number of new applications recorded in April since the beginning was during June 2020, a period when asylum movements largely stalled due to the COVID-19 crisis. Excluding the pandemic period, the BAMF last registered fewer new applications in March 2013.
A decline was also seen in the numbers of follow-up applications, which dropped from 3,242 in March to 2,682 in April.
