New ETCS System Boosts Speed and Efficiency on Major German Rail Route

Deutsche Bahn announced this Thursday that it has successfully commissioned the modern, digital European Train Control System (ETCS) across the entire Riedbahn railway line, marking a milestone nearly eighteen months after the conclusion of the general railway modernization work.

According to a company spokesperson, the comprehensive testing and acceptance process for the European Train Control System on the Riedbahn has been finalized, allowing the speedier operation of long-distance trains. Previously, ICE and Intercity trains travelling on parts of the line were restricted to 160 kilometers per hour using the alternative PZB safety system. With the new system, trains can now travel at 200 kilometers per hour across the whole route, significantly reducing the journey time between Frankfurt/Main and Mannheim by approximately two minutes and a half.

The line itself stretches about 70 kilometers, connecting Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim. Although DB was able to complete the five-month construction phase and resume passenger traffic on December 14, 2024, the official acceptance and rollout of the ETCS system proved to be a longer process. In the initial stages, the system had only been deployed in the southern section of the route. Now, following necessary software adjustments and extensive testing, ETCS has been approved for the full length of the Riedbahn.

DB InfraGO, the subsidiary responsible for the railway network, anticipates that the commissioning of ETCS will lead to further improvements in punctuality for the route. The railway spokesperson added that management plans to closely monitor operations in the initial phase and will undertake any necessary optimizations as required.
