NRW Health Sector Draws Positive Balance in Heat Wave Response, Vows Structural Review

North Rhine-Westphalia Health Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) has announced a preliminary positive evaluation regarding how the healthcare sector managed the recent period of extreme heat. According to reports from the district governments, Laumann stated that the operational structures within emergency services, nursing care, and hospitals proved effective.

The Minister expressed deep gratitude for the dedicated efforts of both paid and volunteer staff who ensured that emergencies were adequately managed and that vulnerable groups-including the elderly, people requiring care, and hospitalized patients-were protected from the harmful effects of the heat.

Despite the initial positive findings, Laumann also confirmed that he plans to conduct a thorough review of the current healthcare infrastructure to address future heatwaves. Over the coming days, his health and nursing department, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, district governments, the hospital association, nursing facilities, and various medical societies, will evaluate the concrete impacts of these extreme temperatures on the entire health and care system.

The examination will identify how all stakeholders responded to the challenge, pinpoint measures that could serve as models for others, and determine areas where improvements can be made in patient care, prevention strategies, and collaboration. The CDU politician stressed that, given the changing climate, the region must get ready for a future where such heatwaves occur more frequently.
