The Parliamentary Directors of the SPD and the Greens responded to a letter circulated on Instagram by 53 participants in the Bundestag simulation program, “Youth and Parliament,” which addressed racist incidents that occurred during the event. The complaint letter was sent to the offices of the directors on Wednesday evening.
In their response, SPD representatives Dirk Wiese and Derya Türk-Nachbaur stated that the SPD parliamentary group would actively support the handling of these events. They are collaborating with the appropriate authorities to ensure that “Youth and Parliament” can continue in the future, maintained as a valuable and safe experience for all attendees. Wiese and Türk-Nachbaur further offered that participants could contact them directly at any time if they become aware of further incidents or developments that require investigation.
Similarly, the Green party’s Parliamentary Director, Irene Mihalic, advocated for a thorough review. She wrote that the events of this year’s “Youth and Parliament” must be carefully examined in order to determine how the safety of this important event can be better guaranteed moving forward. This commitment to thorough review has also been adopted by the Bundestag’s Council of Elders. The Internal Commission will closely monitor this process as a body of the Council of Elders.
