A coalition of nations has significantly tightened sanctions targeting North Korea in response to its illegal activities. In a statement released Wednesday, the European Union, along with Australia and the United States, announced the implementation of new measures. These sanctions specifically target North Korea’s use of foreign labor, malicious cyber activities, and individuals involved in illegal collusion with Russia.
These reinforced measures are aimed at curbing the ability of North Korea to illegally develop weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, as well as countering the unauthorized military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.
The basis for these actions stems from reports by the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team (MSMT), which has been observing North Korea’s failure to comply with UN Security Council resolutions. Following Russia’s veto in 2024 against extending the mandate of the Expert Panels, the MSMT took over the monitoring responsibilities.
The MSMT and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to achieving the “complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization” of North Korea, demanding that the country abandon its illegal programs for the development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles. The signatories collectively called upon all UN member states, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council, to ensure the full implementation of all relevant resolutions.
The declaration was jointly issued by Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
