Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Successful Lung Surgery for Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Doctors at the Gemelli Clinic in Rome announced that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer, following his successful surgery on Tuesday. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung. Samples of tissue examined during the operation were confirmed by the Vatican press office to show the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. The Vatican noted that preliminary examinations had already indicated suspicion of this condition.

The Pope spent approximately three hours in the operating room, with the surgery itself lasting about 90 minutes. Medical staff reported that the procedure was successful and that no complications arose. Following the operation, the Pope regained consciousness and was moved to his room on the 10th floor of the hospital after a brief observation period.

Pope Leo XIV has held the position of Bishop of Rome since May 8, 2025. As the Pope, he functions as the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the head of state of the Vatican City. He was elected as Pope in the fourth round of voting after Pope Francis died in April 2025.
