Pork-First: Minister Lays Out Timeline for Mandatory Farm Kennzeichnung While Delaying Scope Extension

Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) stated that hopes regarding the immediate expansion of the animal husbandry label to multiple types of meat should be tempered. The CSU politician emphasized that the process must be completed step-by-step. He outlined a commitment to finishing the work that his predecessor government had stalled: reliably and practically implementing the animal husbandry label specifically for pork.

Providing a detailed timeline, Rainer confirmed that the draft for the label is scheduled to be submitted to Brussels for notification in May. Following this, it is slated to go to the Cabinet in August. Based on this schedule, the label could potentially take effect on January 1, 2027, with its application intended for the gastronomy sector starting July 1, 2027.

When questioned about when the regulation might be extended to other meat products, Rainer reiterated his current focus. He stressed that they cannot proceed to the second phase before successfully completing the first. “I want to fully implement the animal husbandry label for pork in a reliable and practical manner” he stated, confirming that this specific rollout remains the current priority.
