The CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has moved its election party gathering for Sunday evening due to significant media interest. This shift comes after previous reports indicated conflicts with the press. The party was originally set to “celebrate” at the Schwerin Café Prag, where journalists were supposed to be largely kept out. A spokesperson for the CDU faction in the State Parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday that, owing to the limited capacity of the venue, they could not issue press accreditation for the events. At the time, only the NDR was permitted to report on the election event.
This decision led to controversy. Barring media access to election events was a practice more commonly associated with the AfD, and journalists had successfully taken legal action against similar restrictions, as seen in Thuringia in 2024.
The CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern apparently decided not to engage in such conflicts. A spokesperson informed the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Tuesday that “due to the very numerous media inquiries regarding our election event on the evening of September 20th, we have decided to switch to a different venue.” The Christian Democrats will now meet at the “Tanzstudio Schleebusch,” and seemingly, many press accreditations have now been granted.
In the few days leading up to the state election, the CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ranks between 6 and 8 percent in polls, a decline from the 13.3 percent they achieved five years ago.
