The German Civil Service Union has demanded that the planned tax-free €1,000 bonus be paid to all employees in the public sector. The union’s chairman, Volker Geyer, told the “Bild” newspaper (Wednesday edition) that the government, as the employer, has a role model obligation regarding the planned one-time payments. He stated that if the federal government holds companies accountable, the state itself, as an employer, must set a positive example. Geyer explained that the federal government, the states, and local municipalities should quickly implement the “crisis bonus”. He further insisted that the bonus must be paid as a genuine additional benefit that is not offset or adjusted against wage or salary increases.
