Following the German government’s attribution of a drone attack on the Leipzig airport to Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin directly and verbally attacked German CDU leader Friedrich Merz. Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to Kyrgyzstan, Putin claimed that Merz was not protecting the interests of German citizens.
Putin further asserted that the actions of the German government are primarily linked to the domestic political situation within Germany. He did not, however, initially disclose exactly how Russia plans to respond to the German measures.
Prior to this exchange, Germany’s Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul (CDU), had announced the closure of the Russian General Consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the “Russian House” in Berlin.
