Switzerland opened its World Cup 2026 campaign in Group B with a draw against Qatar, failing to secure what many expected would be a straightforward victory. In a match where Switzerland controlled much of the play and even took the lead, the hosts ultimately allowed Qatar to equalize late in stoppage time.
For large portions of the game, the Swiss team was dominant, generating numerous chances. Early in the match, Dan Ndoye tested goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada multiple times, while on the other side, Edmilson Junior gave away Qatar’s first major opportunity. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo successfully converted a penalty, putting Switzerland ahead 1-0.
Even after taking the lead, Murat Yakin’s squad maintained control. However, players such as Denis Zakaria, Ruben Vargas, and Michel Aebischer failed to convert further chances, all while Mahmoud Abunada held his team steady with several strong saves. Qatar managed only limited genuine attacks, failing twice against Gregor Kobel.
The dominance continued after halftime. Granit Xhaka, Ruben Vargas, and Breel Embolo missed further opportunities to secure a decisive lead. Qatar struggled to find offensive avenues, rarely threatening the stable Swiss defense.
Just when a Swiss opening victory seemed inevitable, Qatar managed to find the equalizer. Following a cross into the far post, Boualem Khoukhi successfully challenged Miro Muheim and headed the ball into the net in the fourth minute of stoppage time, leveling the score at 1-1.
This late goal secured a valuable point for Qatar, while Switzerland started its tournament with a draw despite clear field advantages and plenty of attacking chances.
