Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) cautioned against a climate of fear surrounding the AfD, noting that increased discussion and the creation of anxiety only boost the party’s visibility. Speaking to the “Handelsblatt,” Schneider asserted, “The more we talk about it and create fear, the more attention the AfD receives, which might then translate into votes.”
When asked if he was worried about a further rise in the AfD’s influence, the SPD politician replied that he was not. Instead, he stressed the importance of “sober work” and the ability of democratic candidates to convince voters at a local level. Schneider emphasized that polls should not be equated with final election results, stating, “Polls are trends, not the final outcome.” He remained confident that, ultimately, a democratic majority could prevail.
Furthermore, the minister, who is from Thuringia, highlighted the need for a stronger representation of democratic politicians in Eastern Germany. He pointed out that there are not enough Eastern Germans in the cabinet. Schneider explained that he travels frequently throughout the East, emphasizing that presence is crucial, though he also admitted to genuinely enjoying his time there.
