Record Heat Deaths Spark Green Party Criticism of Government’s Failure to Protect Citizens

The number of heat-related fatalities in Germany has reached an alarming high, leading the Green Party in the federal government to accuse the administration of political failure. Misbah Khan, a deputy faction member of the Greens in the Bundestag, told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (the Friday edition) that the 14,000 heat-related deaths represent a shocking figure and signify a failure of the federal government’s heat protection efforts. Khan argued that many of these deaths could have potentially been prevented through timely prevention measures, effective heat mitigation, and consistent state crisis management.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) raised its figures for heat-related deaths in Germany to approximately 14,000 people in a report released this Thursday, covering the period from April 6 to August 9.

In the same vein, the Left Party in the Bundestag has also criticized the federal government for not adequately protecting the population.

Khan stressed that it is particularly troubling that Chancellor Friedrich Merz has not visibly or clearly positioned himself regarding the health consequences of the catastrophe during the ongoing heatwaves. The Green politician stated that the Chancellor continuing his vacation while the dramatic consequences escalate sends a fatal and unempathetic signal, which does not do justice to those affected and their families.

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and severe due to global warming. This effect will continue to intensify as long as additional greenhouse gases, such as those emitted from burning coal, oil, and gas, are released into the atmosphere.
