Rising Political Extremism Threatens Democracy, Affecting Women and Necessitating Stronger Legal Action

Federal Minister of Justice Stefanie Hubig (SPD) expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of politically motivated crime, specifically noting the heightened impact on women. Speaking to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, she referred to recent statistical data presented by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and BKA President Holger Münch, which indicates a rise in societal political hatred and a higher readiness for politically motivated violence. Hubig stated that this finding should deeply worry all democrats, emphasizing that politically motivated crime poses a serious threat to democracy.

Of particular dismay, she noted the strong increase in offenses targeting women. Hubig observed that after decades of progress in protecting women, misogynistic ideologies are once again on the rise.

The SPD politician asserted that the fight against politically motivated crime must be waged primarily through the legal system. She stressed that a powerful justice system and modern criminal law are essential tools for this effort and called for important further measures to be implemented soon. Hubig suggested that by initiating a new “Pact for the Rule of Law,” the government could send a clear signal that both the federal government and the states are committed to investing in the rule of law, thereby defending democracy against its adversaries.
