Portugal secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their match at the World Cup on Tuesday. Under the guidance of coach Roberto Martinez, the Portuguese side dictated the pace from the starting whistle, immediately putting pressure on the World Cup newcomers.
The breakthrough came quickly in the 6th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal ahead following a cross from João Cancelo. Just eleven minutes later, Nuno Mendes doubled the lead with a direct free-kick, making it 2-0.
Uzbekistan struggled immensely to break through the Portuguese defense. Although Azizjon Ganiev appeared to score, a subsequent review disallowed the potential goal due to a prior foul. The momentum continued to build shortly before the break, as Ronaldo registered his second goal of the evening in the 39th minute, stamping his authority on the match.
Portugal maintained control after the halftime break. The lead was significantly extended when an own goal by Abduqodir Khusanov saw the score reach 4-0 in the 60th minute.
In the final stages, Portugal managed their comfortable lead while Uzbekistan managed only sporadic threats. Eldor Shomurodov wasted the outsider’s best chance in the 78th minute, hitting the post. The final score was etched in the 87th minute by substitute Rafael Leão. After an attack down the right flank, Nelson Semedo delivered the ball into the center, where Leão struck directly from approximately 14 meters out, sealing the 5-0 outcome.
This significant win gives Portugal a much stronger footing heading into their final group match, while Uzbekistan faces increased pressure following their second defeat of the tournament.
