According to Serap Güler, the CDU’s disappointing performance in the Saxony-Anhalt state election also serves as a warning shot for the national political scene. The CDU board member told ntv on Monday that she had “never experienced anything like it” with Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), adding, “But we have never had such a day in Germany.”
Güler expressed the hope that such a situation would not recur, stressing, however, that the responsibility does not rest solely with Friedrich Merz. She confirmed that the Chancellor took the result “very, very seriously” and made this point “very, very clearly” both within the federal executive board and the parliamentary faction.
In focusing on the bad CDU result, Güler clarified that she does not want to pin the failure on the top candidate and former minister-president, Sven Schulze. She noted that since 60 percent of voters in Saxony-Anhalt stated that the result was also related to the federal government, the government must address this issue. Ultimately, she concluded that the dissatisfaction with all parties that have been governing and taking responsibility up until this point was a key factor.
