Schulze Vows Swift Minister-President Election Despite Challenging Political Outlook

The Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt and CDU top candidate, Sven Schulze, has addressed speculations that he might remain in an acting capacity following the September state election if the majority results remain unclear.

During an appearance on the Politico news magazine’s Berlin-Playbook podcast, Schulze was asked whether a new Minister-President would be elected within a few weeks of the vote. He confirmed this possibility, stating, “Yes, of course.” However, he also clarified that while a Minister-President requires a majority in the state parliament, there is no set deadline for the election. Schulze emphasized that while there is no specific timeframe, the selection must occur. He concluded his statement on the matter by saying, “And then I will, of course, put myself forward for the election.”

Discussions within the Union are currently underway regarding how to manage potentially complicated majority scenarios after the vote. This context follows a recent INSA survey showing the AfD polling at 42 percent, nearly double the results of the CDU at 24 percent. Despite these figures, Schulze remains optimistic. “I am convinced people vote for people,” he said. When referencing his personal approval ratings concerning the Minister-President position, he noted that polls indicate he is the number one choice for citizens in the state. Schulze declined to speculate on possible coalition or majority models post-election, stressing that his focus remains entirely on the campaign. “I am fighting for every single vote here.”
