Second Suspect Arrested in Croatia in Connection with Nord Stream Pipeline Attack

Investigators in Croatia have apprehended a second suspect related to the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The local police carried out the arrest in the city of Pula, according to a statement issued by the Federal Prosecutor General on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Vladimir Z., is strongly suspected of jointly causing an explosive detonation, unconstitutional sabotage, and the destruction of structures. Following his extradition from Croatia, he is set to appear before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice. This man is reportedly the same individual that the Federal Prosecutor General had tracked down in Poland last year, though the Polish judiciary eventually allowed him to be released.

The attack took place on September 26, 2022, and involved four explosions. The sabotage resulted in the sectional destruction of both strands of Nord Stream 1 and one of the two strands of Nord Stream 2. These pipelines lie on the seabed of the Baltic Sea and were used to transport natural gas from Russia to Germany, although they were not in operation when the attacks occurred. Meanwhile, German investigators now have little doubt that the attack was orchestrated from Ukraine.
