The German Weather Service (DWD) has expanded its warning regarding scattered severe thunderstorms. Meteorologists reported on Wednesday that these conditions are expected in the Upper Swabia region and throughout the area encompassing Hamburg up to the coastal areas of Schleswig-Holstein on the Baltic Sea.
The current warning is valid until 5:00 PM on Wednesday, but the service stated that an extension or further expansion into other areas is likely. Due to the severe weather, there is a risk of flooding in basements and streets. Local conditions could also bring about lightning damage and the formation of tornadoes. Further potential effects include uprooted trees, falling roof tiles, and other loose objects.
The meteorologists explained that moderately warm to warm sea air is flowing into Germany, driven by winds shifting toward the west and north, and currently circulating under a light high-pressure system in the western regions. The current outlook suggests only sporadic thunderstorm developments, which are mainly expected to exceed the storm thresholds concerning heavy rainfall. Furthermore, there remains a low potential for tornadoes.
