Skills Shortage Narrows in Germany, Dropping Nearly 8% Amid Economic Slowdown

Persistent economic weakness has significantly narrowed the specialist labor shortage in the German job market. According to a study conducted by the Competence Center for Workforce Security (Kofa) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, which was reported by the “Rheinische Post,” the gap between the number of qualified unemployed individuals and open positions dropped by 7.8 percent in March 2026 compared to the same month last year.

The study noted a particularly strong decrease in the demand for workers in social professions. For instance, the staffing gap for educators in childcare centers saw a notable decline of 5,300 compared to the previous year. However, a deficit of 12,200 specialists still remains in this sector, meaning that one in every two open positions went unfilled.

Kofa attributed this reduction in the shortage to municipal savings plans and a decline in migration.
