Ahead of the Bundestag debate on organ donation scheduled for this Thursday, the Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD) has welcomed the initiative presented by several parliamentarians regarding a needed reform.
Michaela Engelmeier, the chairperson of the SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” that although the number of organ donations has recently increased, it remains far below what is necessary. She stressed that thousands of people are still waiting for a life-saving organ-too many people-and emphasized that anyone could be next on the waiting list. Therefore, she welcomed the parliamentary impetus, which she believes is helping to move the debate forward again.
Engelmeier also issued a call to all individuals to find the courage to make a decision, whether that choice stems from empathy, conviction, or solidarity. She emphasized the urgent need for more comprehensive public education and a more respectful conversation about the issue. Organ donation, she asserted, must be recognized for what it truly is: an act of solidarity. She also mentioned that she personally holds an organ donation card.
The Bundestag is set to debate a fundamental reform of organ donation once again on Thursday.
