Following criticism from several state premiers regarding the coalition’s pension schemes, the VdK social association has also called for substantial improvements. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Bentele stated that the cabinet needs to significantly enhance the reform package so that nobody is left behind. While acknowledging that reopening specific points for debate is “politically challenging,” he emphasized that it is “conceptually exactly the right approach.”
Bentele argued that the proposed abolition of the tax-free pension after 45 years, along with higher deductions for early retirement, was an idea from the outset that clashes with the feelings of those who have worked and paid into the system for many years. He added that this policy demonstrates a lack of understanding regarding people’s life planning. According to Bentele, anyone who has paid in for 45 years has legitimately earned their retirement; for many, their energy reserves are simply depleted.
These concerns have gained momentum, especially after three CDU state premiers from East Germany recently revolted against the plan to scrap the no-deduction pension after 45 years of insurance. This objection has attracted strong support from figures such as Manuela Schwesig, the Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SPD).
